2-12 General Description Peripheral Bays The system supports a variety of standard PC AT-compatible peripheral devices. Installing or Removing the Front Bezel When turning the power of the server on/off, accessing the optical disk drive and the backup file device, or installing or removing a hard disk drive on or from a hard disk drive bay, first remove the front bezel.

General Description 2-23 IDENTIFICATION OF SERVERS ~ UID SWITCH ~ A UID (Unit ID) LED is provided on the front panel and rear panel. If more than one server is mounted in a single rack, the LED identifies the server you are performing maintenance on. The UID LED turns on or blinks when the UID (Unit ID) switch on the front panel is pressed.

2-26 General Description After taking out the disc, return the tray into the drive. If you fail to eject the tray with the Eject button and remove the disc from the server, follow the procedure below. Manual ejection hole Press the POWER switch to power off the server. (The POWER LED goes off.) Insert a metal pin of approximately 1.2 mm in diameter and 100 mm in length (a straightened large paper clip will suffice) into the manual ejection hole on the right front of the optical disk drive and gently push it in until the tray is ejected.
The Flash FDD is only intended as a temporary means of performing processing such as reading device drivers during installation, so do not use the FDD to back up data. Compensation for recorded data NEC will not pay compensation for data recorded on the Flash FDD if the data is lost.

3-6 Setting Up Your Server Installation This server can be installed in either the NEC rack or a third vendor's rack. Take the following steps to install the server in the rack. Preparation for installation When shipped from factory, the left and right slide rails are fixed with tapes at the front and side faces to prevent from falling off during transportation.

Setting Up Your Server 3-7 While pushing the unlock button on the front of the server, hold the rails and slowly move them toward the rear of the server. Press this button to unlock the server. After a while, the rails are locked with clicking sound. Pull the release levers on the left and right sides of the server toward direction indicated by an arrow (white) in the figure, and remove them from the server while unlocking it.

Setting Up Your Server 3-11 At least two persons are required to install the server. Securely hold the server and install it in the rack. Firmly fit the inner rails on the sides of the server into the rail assemblies that are installed on the rack, and then slowly push the server into the rack.

When the power cord from the server to a UPS, change the BIOS setup of the server to link with power supply from the UPS.

Without the backup data, you will not be able to recover the information. You can save the information by the following process. NOTE: An optional USB floppy disk drive is required. Insert the NEC EXPRESSBUILDER DVD into the optical disk drive and restart the system. Select [Tool menu (Normal mode)]. Select [English].
Chapter 4 Configuring Your Server Configuration and setup utilities are used to change your system configuration. You can configure your system, as well as option boards you may add to your system, using the BIOS SETUP Utility. Several unique system parameters are configured using the BIOS SETUP, which is stored in the system FLASH memory.
4-2 Configuring Your Server SYSTEM BIOS (SETUP) This section describes how to specify Basic Input Output System (BIOS) settings. Make sure you understand the information in this section so you can specify the correct settings when installing the server or adding or removing an optional component. The SETUP utility is used to change system configuration parameters.
Configuring Your Server 4-3 Starting SETUP Utility Turning on the server starts POST (Power On Self-Test) and displays its check results. If the NEC logo is displayed, press Esc. After a few seconds, the following message appears at the bottom left of the screen.

Dust buildup inside the server can lead to several problems. As dust acts as a thermal insulator, a buildup can prevent proper system cooling.
7-4 Maintenance Cleaning the Keyboard/Mouse Make sure that the server and peripheral devices are all off-powered (the POWER/SLEEP lamp goes off), and then wipe the keyboard surface with a dry cloth. Chapter 8 Troubleshooting If your server does not operate as expected, read this chapter before assuming a failure. NOTE: For provision against an unexpected failure, it is recommended to install the maintenance utility, NEC ESMPRO, to the server and client computers.
Monitor the occurrence of fault by using NEC ESMPRO Manager during the system operation. Especially take note on whether any alert is reported to NEC ESMPRO Manager on the management PC. Check whether any alert is reported in NEC ESMPRO Manager.
The table below explains the STATUS LED indication, the meanings, and the procedures. NOTES: If NEC ESMPRO is installed, you can confirm the cause of a failure by referring to the error log. If shutdown processing can be performed via the operating system when you want to restart the system after turning the power off, restart the system by performing shutdown processing.

BIOS/FW Updating This menu allows you to update the software module such as BIOS and firmware of the server by using the update disk (3.5-inch floppy disk) that is distributed from NEC customer service representative. After restarting the system, an update program is started automatically from floppy disk, and the various BIOS and firmware programs are updated.
IMPORTANT: Do not use this feature on any other computer than the server, or on any other server obtained without the NEC EXPRESSBUILDER. Doing so may cause a failure of the server. Be sure to select [Tool menu (Redirection mode)] in [Boot selection] menu from the remote console.

8-60 Troubleshooting FORCED SHUTDOWN Use this function when an OS command does not shut down the server, the POWER/SLEEP switch does not turn off the server, or resetting does not work. Press and hold the POWER/SLEEP switch on the server for at least four seconds. The power is forcibly turned off.

However, NEC does not assume any liability for damage to optional devices or the server or malfunctions of the server resulted from installation by the user.
